ABOUT ARTIST
Ban Zhang Zhe (Cheong Chi Ping) is an artist who not only presents the characteristics of the era through traditional sculpture but also boldly explores the use of non-traditional materials, integrating his work into the contemporary art context. He continuously delves into the philosophical aspects of art, and becoming a platform for thoughtful dialogue that reflects the diversity and complexity of contemporary society. Zhang has participated in countless exhibitions, showcasing his work "The Middle of Living Organism" at He Xiangning Art Museum in 1998, representing HK in the "First Contemporary Sculpture Art Annual." His piece "Goddess of Mercy" was exhibited at the "Contemporary HK Art Biennial" in 1996 and at the "HK Contemporary Art Festival" in Toronto, Canada, in 1997, demonstrating his influence on the international stage and contributing to the dialogue within the global contemporary art community. Continuously pursuing innovation, Zhang expanded his artistic practice to Taiwan in 2000. In 2003, his work "AWTU2020215 vs EMCU2857480" represented HK at "Kaohsiung International Container Art Festival". In 2008, he returned to HK and was invited to take residence at "JCCAC," where he continued to cultivate and refine his artistic concepts, leading to the birth of the iconic series "Recollection of Time series—The Counterattack of the Hanger." This series uses discarded hangers as the creative material for sculptures, conveying the shifts in the global economy. Hangers once played a significant role in fashion industry; now, their transformation and metamorphosis illustrate humanity's capacity for rethinking and reusing the material world, embodying the values of creativity and sustainability. Various works have been exhibited at the "《Oasis‧Mirage》HK International Sculpture Symposium " in 2009, the "HK Sculpture Biennale" in 2010, and the "Factory-Made: JCCAC 10-Year Retrospective Exhibition" in 2018, continually challenging the audience's perceptions and thoughts. With the rise of digital art, "Recollection of Time series—The Counterattack of the Hanger" has also sparked a revolution in material application. The piece "Prismatic Rainbow Mascot", exhibited at the "Sai Kung Hoi Art Festival" in 2024, elevates the dialogue between nature and materials to a new level, showcasing the innovation and experimental spirit of contemporary art. Zhang's artistic journey encompasses various mediums, including participation in the "Spain LOOP Video Art Festival" in 2010 with "This is Hong Kong," presenting conceptual artwork "Shima Expo" in Lamma Mia 2021, and showcasing the large paper sculpture "Zhong Kui" at the "Chinatown San Francisco Hungry Ghost Festival" in 2023. He continuously seeks change while remaining true to his original intentions, skillfully combining different mediums and digital tools to present three-dimensional sculptures from multiple angles, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in an ocean of art and experience the limitless possibilities and creative currents of contemporary art.
